Summer Solstice – how to enjoy your new home on the longest day of the year

Posted on June 20th, 2017

The 21st of June marks Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year. After Wednesday the nights will start to get shorter, but don’t worry, there are plenty more light summer nights to enjoy yet!

The forecast continues to look great for Wednesday, when there will a be a whopping 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight. The word ‘solstice’ derives from a Latin word meaning ‘sun standing still’, there’s a bonus point for your next pub quiz!

So, here’s a few ideas on how to enjoy your new home in the sunshine;

  1. Find a nook to read a book

If curling up with a good book is your idea of paradise, get comfy and enter a world of fiction whilst the golden sun dances over the pages of your favourite novel. Our new homes in Belmont overlook the water and are perfect for relaxing in a hammock, whilst the sun is shining. Elle Magazine has created a list of the 24 best books to read this summer, find your next page turner here.

  1. Make a “zen den”

Need to keep the kids entertained? Why not make a funky den with big cushions and blankets outside? Add a real ‘wow’ factor by stringing up some fairy lights. Whether you’re dealing with the terrible twos or moody teenagers, this den is the perfect place for all the family to relax and watch the sunset. This is sure to score you some cool parent points too! Want some time to yourself? This doesn’t just have to be for kids, create a relaxing outdoor canopy for yourself and watch the sun go down.

  1. Host a garden dinner party

What better way to show off your new home than to host a fancy dinner party for friends and family! Many of our homes come with open plan, contemporary kitchens with family/dining areas and patio doors leading into the garden. Whether you want to cook up some prawns and burgers on the BBQ or serve some swish appetizers, your guests are sure to be impressed with your new home and modern branded appliances!*

  1. Get arty

The sun is due to set at around 9.31pm on Wednesday, this means you have plenty of time to set up an easel and paint the sunset. This is a great way to unwind and have some ‘me’ time. Alternatively get the kids involved in drawing and painting the outdoors, they could even use some wash away chalk and get a bit messy! You’ll also have some special artwork to hang around the house or on the fridge!

  1. Floral fancy

Perk up your windowsills and make the neighbours jealous with your floral displays! It’s peony season and the big petal clusters look beautiful in a clear vase. Enjoy the longest day of the year by picking some fresh flowers from your new garden and arranging them. Got a friend’s birthday coming up? A handmade bouquet would make a wonderful gift too!

  1. Never mind kale, make a cocktail

If you’re partial to a tipple, invite some friends over and host a cocktail making class! The late sunset means your afternoon drinks will last well into the night, which is good news for party animals! Pinterest has loads of ideas and recipes for classy cocktails and old classics too!

Here’s the recipe for the very aptly named ‘stay up with the sunset’ cocktail:

  • 1 measure of rum
  • 2 measures of orange juice
  • ½ measure of syrup
  • ½ measure of lime juice
  • Splash of grenadine

Shake it up and serve over ice and fresh mint leaves…enjoy!

If prosecco is your thing, create a ‘pimp your prosecco’ stand, where your guests can add different flavours and fruit to their glasses!
