Your Ultimate Moving Checklist
Posted on July 6th, 2023Buying a new home and moving in is an exciting milestone, and you should be very proud of yourself for achieving it! However, despite the endless paperwork and sorting you’ve already done, when it comes to physically moving home, there is plenty more to do. Luckily, we’ve put together the ultimate moving checklist to help you move into your dream Seddon Homes property feeling prepared and excited for this next chapter in your life.
Register your new postal address
First things first, your new home must be registered when you take ownership. It is vital to ensure your dream home has a recognised address, so make sure to register plenty of time in advance prior to making the move.
The sooner you register your new postal address, the better. Firstly, it will make it easier and more straightforward in ensuring that your post moves with you. Additionally, your utilities and service providers may be reluctant to connect properties that don’t have an official postal address. And, if needed, it makes it easier for the likes of the emergency services to locate you.
Pack in advance
It may be tempting to leave packing until the last minute and quickly do it a few days before your move. However, when you’re moving, it’s best to get organised, and packing in advance is a sure-fire way to reduce stress as your moving day approaches. Start with the non-essential items that you know you won’t need in the lead-up to your move, such as any seasonal clothes or decorations. When it comes to more fragile items, keep them safe and wrap them in bubble wrap, packing paper, and even tea towels. It’s also a great idea to label the boxes they’re in and indicate which side of the box should face upwards to minimise breakage risk and remind yourself to take extra care when handling them.
Don’t forget to label all your boxes, this will make unpacking at your new home much more efficient. You could even label them with the room they belong to, making it easier for yourself and your movers to stay organised.
You’ll also want to pack a priority box as part of your moving checklist. This box will be the first one you open in your dream home and should include everything you will need first, including:
- Cleaning products, bin bags and washing up liquid
- Kitchen and toilet roll
- Duvets and bedding for the first night in your dream home
- Toiletries such as hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste
- Basic kitchen supplies or a takeaway menu!
- Don’t forget the kettle! Take a break during the move with tea or coffee in your favourite mug
- Make your house feel like a home with a diffuser, flowers or by lighting a candle
If your children and pets haven’t been with you during the busy day, you can welcome them into their new home with their favourite toys and beds, providing them with a sense of familiarity as they get settled in.
Put together an essentials kit
Your moving day is going to be busy, so it’s a great idea to pack an essentials kit ahead of time to make sure that all of the important things and documents are close by. If your children are joining you in the move, it’s good to pack some toys, books, and snacks that will help to keep them entertained during the busy day.
- Phone chargers
- Any valuables
- Important documents and paperwork
- Medications
- Change of clothes
Utilities and services
Something that a lot of people tend to forget when moving home is sorting out your utilities, services, and subscriptions. This includes notifying utilities to disconnect services at your current home with plenty of notice before your move. Also, make sure to update your address with relevant companies and transfer or cancel your subscriptions.
It can take some time for providers to connect your new home to services such as the internet, so make sure to download anything important you might need (just in case). And while you’re at it, you could even download a film or two to watch on your first night in your forever home!
Let people know you’re moving
The ultimate moving checklist wouldn’t be complete without updating your address and letting everyone who needs to know about your move, know. From friends and family to the local council, there are a lot of people who need to know about your brand-new address, so we’ve noted a few of them below for you:
- Doctor, dentist, and optician
- Schools and places of work
- Banks, insurance companies, and the HMRC
- DVLA – update your licence with your new address
- Vets – make sure your pets’ microchips are correct
You can also redirect your post with the Royal Mail, giving yourself a little more time to get everybody up to date.
